What’s a marriage without an affair? A sailing ship without a storm? Or a gymnast with no leotard? Last week I was at the post office posting a pair of my underwear to a customer in the UK (my own country) when, to my surprise, I was asked, “what are you sending?” by a well-meaning postal worker as she groped my package as if to see what was inside. I was taken aback. Because, while I’m used to being asked this when sending internationally but not a domestic large letter. My first response was to blush and stutter.

“Umm….a gift item.”

When I realized this was not enough information for the person behind the desk I offered, “textiles.” At that point I think she noted my awkwardness and appeared satisfied with my answer.

I left the post office, bemused, wondering what the response would have been had I answered plainly and said, “a pair of knickers.” It probably would have been a bit embarrassing, but it would have been honest and unambiguous, perhaps a little empowering too.

Though I like to think of myself as forward thinking and proud of my small involvement in adult entertainment, when it comes down to speaking up about it, I choke.

Here’s another example. I’m involved in some voluntary work a couple of days per week. The subject of fetishes came up in conversation at tea break. I said that I found fetishes fascinating and said, “did you know that there is a fetish for being wrapped in clingfilm?”

This piqued further interest and I was asked suspiciously, “how on earth do you know that?” Oops! I now had to decide whether to give the honest answer or quickly find a believable lie. I went for the lie.

How can we begin to live in a world where adult work is socially acceptable when we can’t even admit to being a part of it?

The people in question probably wouldn’t think less of me but I didn’t want to risk making them feel uncomfortable.

How would it be received if I answered honestly in a job interview to questions like, “tell me about a time where you had to develop a rapport with a customer,” or “what experience do you have taking phone calls/keeping records/working towards deadlines?” Would you draw on your experience in adult entertainment? I have been in situations where I’ve had to bend the truth, and fortunately I’ve also had other experiences where I could talk openly about my sex work. Would you be happy to include cam­girl/porn actress/phone sex operator, etc, on your CV? Or try to explain a feasible reason for a gap in your employment history spanning many months or years?

Talking about working in adult entertainment under these sort of circumstances could be a great way to inform people about what it actually involves. It could be a great way to begin shattering stereotypes and prejudice. Or it could be a great way to talk yourself out of a job.

I ask because I am genuinely curious and, much as I enjoy adult work, there are other kinds of work I want to do, too. I want to know how other people answer similar questions. I would love to be able to talk openly with friends and strangers about what I do. For one thing, I don’t like people thinking I sit around doing nothing all day. But also, I LIKE talking about the work that I do.

Fetishes are interesting. So is the infinite diversity of sexual desire. Many people I know will happily have giggle­-some tea ­break conversations about sex and fetishes but squirm if the conversation gets personal and you ask them, “do you watch porn?” I hope one day this will change. One of many reasons I am hopeful for this change is it will make my trips to the post office much less awkward.

To celebrate the National Lingerie Day in America, from Europe with love, we decided to please each other in lingerie. All the time. At some point, I had hubby wear mine, and me wear his. In 2015, I made about as much money uploading a few #metime videos to MakeLoveNotPorn.tv as I did selling e-books on Amazon. It was pretty remarkable to hold my tax forms side-by-side and compare them. From a financial standpoint, both of these projects were about equally justified — and one had been a lot more fun than the other.

For years, I’d held off on exploring my sexuality in art because I wanted to make a living as a mainstream artist. Once I was a published writer or an indie filmmaker, I thought, I could push the boundaries of my art with more explicit content.

But both of the industries I wanted to be a part of were impenetrable. Writing a novel or a film script now seems like a project from another era.

I can share the same ideas, and reach more people, by putting sex at the forefront of my creative expression.

Having sex in front of the camera doesn’t actually feel like much of a leap for me. When I asked my parents for a video camera during high school, I told them I wanted to film our vacations. But in reality, I wanted to set it up to record myself in my bedroom, masturbating for the camera, like the men and women I’d seen online.

Watching porn didn’t make me numb to or desensitized by sex; it made me think creatively about it. By the time I got to film school, I’d begun working through a list of movies that explored sexuality, from Y Tu Mama Tambien to Last Tango in Paris. Later, there would be Kaboom! and Shortbus and Secretary.

But my dreams of becoming an art-porn provocateur took a backseat to mainstream projects. My friends and I never talked about porn — and I was still too inexperienced to be having much sex of my own, never mind to direct a sex scene. I posed nude for my girlfriend a couple of times, but even she never knew the full extent of my fantasies.

As time went by, it seemed unlikely that the right opportunities would come along organically. I was too shy to try webcamming. I was too uncomfortable to ask my friends to take the kinds of photos I’d need for a modeling profile.

It was up to me to find a secluded spot to set up my camera and record myself—in the woods, in the bedroom, in the shower, in the mirror—creating some of the videos I would eventually begin uploading to MLNP.tv.

These days, I’m surrounded by a more open-minded community of artists  and sex-positive activists. Being naked on the Internet is no longer the big deal it once was. Here in Portland, I live down the street from a popular S&M club; each year, a bunch of locals submit entries to Dan Savage’s amateur porn contest Humpfest.

Even my friends from college, whom I once thought would never see my point of view, have dabbled in erotic art themselves. On my last visit to LA, they were hosting a group of Airbnb guests who also happened to be porn stars from Europe.

“I’ve been thinking of getting into modeling,” I told the guests shyly.

They gave me their advice, and recommended a few of their favorite artists from the indie porn world: Jiz Lee. Lucie Blush. Erika Lust. It was the last bit of encouragement I needed.

Over the next year, I posted a bunch of pictures to Fetlife. I arranged for some photo shoots on ModelMayhem. I uploaded a few of my videos to MLNP.tv, which I’d heard about a few years earlier from Cindy Gallop’s TED talk.

MLNP seemed like the perfect place to test the waters: a progressive, sex-positive site where I could retain creative control over my videos and see what kind of responses I got.

I don’t have all the answers yet. I still haven’t shot any videos with a partner or a crew. I don’t know whether to keep my NSFW Twitter account separate from my mainstream account.

But I’m optimistic. We’re entering a new age of pornography — one with an emphasis on ethical production and consumption; one that values queer, trans, and feminist perspectives ; and one that welcomes intellectual discussion and sex education as part of our work.

We’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible when we reclaim porn from the corporate, mainstream studios that have dominated it for the past few decades.

Recently, my friend showed me the Four Chambers project, an artistic porn series funded by a Patreon campaign. It’s exactly the kind of project that I want to be a part of. Erotic, edgy, beautifully shot — and independently crowd-funded.

I’ve also launched a new project, Kinky Hippies, where I’ll use erotic photography and video to explore some of my own values around gender and sexual orientation, rooted in an ecosexual, Pacific Northwest vibe.

It’s been a long journey—but almost ten years after film school, I’m finally making the kind of art I always had in mind.

It’s a platform for “socially acceptable and shareable sexual content” — something that previously didn’t exist. Instead of unrealistic acting by traditional porn stars, MNLP stars are real people having real sex; sex that’s messy, silly, passionate, and everything in between. These homemade sex tapes, Gallop hopes, will help people, particularly young men, get rid of the inaccurate ideas about sex that have been ingrained in their minds.

At the NYC Porn Film Festival on Saturday, June 4, MLNP is hosting a“Social Sex Revolution” event in NYC, featuring two short talks and a screening of some of their “real world sex” films — and you can buy tickets in advance for only $12. I spoke to Madam Curator Sarah Beall to find out more about the goal of the screening, and how MLNP plans to change the way society views sex and pornography.

It’s Not Amateur Porn

MLNP wants you to know that they don’t consider their homemade videos to be ‘amateur porn’ — that implies that only porn stars are ‘experts’ at sex, which is certainly not the case. They live by the mantra: “Pro porn. Pro sex. Pro knowing the difference.” While MLNP certainly believes in having spaces for the theatrics of traditional porn outside of their site, they also think it’s crucial that people watching porn know that it’s largely acting, and that real sex doesn’t always come with all the bells and whistles.

Hello wonderful people of Make Love Not Porn! We are so thrilled to be part of this community! We stumbled upon MLNP a few months ago and have been crazy about it ever since. We just knew we had to be part of the #realworldsex movement.

We’re Andy and Becky, the creators of a site called A Couple of Kinks where we write sex toy reviews, ‘how to’ guides and stories of our sex adventures. More importantly, we’re a couple that loves discovering new kinks – including filming!

What started off as a one-night stand has led to a three-year adventure-filled relationship. We weren’t always comfortable being open with each other, but we slowly realized that what turned one of us on, really turned on the other person.

It all started a few months into our relationship when Andy convinced Becky to introduce a lowly vibrator into the mix. It might seem small, but breaking down that one barrier led to better overall communication. We got to open up about Becky’s bisexuality, Andy’s obsession with all things anal, Becky’s love of being watched and Andy’s love of doing the watching, among other fun things. We seem to be on the same page about a lot of things, so it was only natural for us to decide together to share our sex life with the community of MLNP. Our first video isn’t going to be our kinkiest, but we wanted to portray a general idea of what really happens when we have sex. Let’s just say that while editing this video we learned quite a few things that we will modify for our next filming session. Each video is going to be a new experience, and we are so excited to share this simple, raw video of our intimacy.

Your sex might look similar to ours, or it might look incredibly different and that is okay. It is so important for the conversation around porn and sex to involve real stories. I remember being really turned on when I watched Chuck and Blair make out in the backseat of a cab in the first season of Gossip Girl. What I really liked about this site is that it does not claim to be anti-porn nor is it saying that mainstream porn is bad; in this TED talk, Gallop herself admits to enjoying a lot of hardcore porn. Do not think that ‘making love’ means that the porn videos are any less bold or attempt to show gooey romance, it’s simply more realistic and leaves preferences up to individual choice. You can even upload your own videos and from the earnings you get in return, you can rent other videos from the site.

When discussing the effect of modern technology on our sex lives, we often focus on things such as the latest advances built into the toys we take into the bedroom, or how dating apps like Tinder and Grindr have impacted how we find partners, we often―at least when speaking about adults―forget to talk about pornography. And why would we? Explicit sexual material is by no means a modern invention; there are reliefs and carvings from ancient Egypt, Greece and India depicting all manner of sexual acts.

What’s different  now is our increased access to porn, as well as the sheer variety of it that is just 2 clicks away. What that has meant for modern sex―the good and the bad―has been talked about by sex and relationship researches and counselors when helping individuals and couples, but one woman, Cindy Gallop, has taken the direct action against the things she’s observed with the creation of the “un-porn” website, MakeLoveNotPorn.

Who Is Cindy Gallop?

Cindy Gallop began her career in advertising in the late 80s, and excelled in the industry, founding the US branch of her London firm and later earning the honor of Advertising Woman of the Year in 2003.

Just 6 years later, Gallop was giving a presentation at TEDTalk that has been called “one of the event’s most talked about.”  Her TEDTalk, which was also the launch of MakeLoveNotPorn, involved an unusually frank (for TEDTalk) discussion of how exactly she came to conceive of the project.

As Gallop explains, “[It] was an accident that came out of direct personal experience.

I date younger men, predominantly twenty-somethings. About 9 or 10 years ago – bear in mind this is long before the media ever picked up on this – I began realizing  that I was encountering an issue that would never have occurred to me if I had not experienced it so intimately: what happens when total freedom of access to hardcore porn online, meets our society’s equally total reluctance to talk openly and honestly about sex, and results in porn becoming by default the sex education of today, in not a good way.

Sex is personal. Some of us like to be spanked, sat on and slapped; others like slow, considered love-making. Cindy Gallop asked herself this question – the result was MakeLoveNotPorn, a site sharing real sex submitted by real people. Gallop quickly enlisted Sarah Beall as the site’s curator; Beall states the beauty of awkwardness – “we want to be able to see people drop lube off the bed and have to scurry around naked looking for it” – and encourages performers to steer clear of clichés. Furthermore, every effort is taken to make sure both the sex and the submission are entirely consensual, and that depictions of safe sex are provided (under the ‘Condom Hot’ tag).

The site’s reach has been astronomical, and development plans are currently underway – there are plans for a mini-documentary in collaboration with Chandelier Creative, as well as plans to expand the site to include erotica, photography and a sex education platform. Not only is it refreshing to see a shift from a focus on the (male) money shot, it’s refreshing for a site to depict this climax without women having to wipe the residue from their mascara. Beall is open about the need for diversity, calling out for queer, non-normative couples to showcase their sex lives in order to remove the element of fetishisation too often associated with trans porn stars. The future of online sexual content is in our hands – here, ahead of her talk tonight at Chandelier Creative in NYC, Gallop explains why we should all share our experiences of love, not porn.

What inspired you to create MakeLoveNotPorn?

Cindy Gallop: I realised through dating younger men that I was intimately experiencing the dual nature of what happens when today’s total freedom of access to hardcore porn online meets our society’s total reluctance to talk openly and honestly about sex. I figured I couldn’t be alone, so I did something about it. Eight years ago I put up this site to balance the myths of hardcore porn with reality, and I had the chance to launch it at TED. I made a deliberate decision to be very explicit, because I knew the audience wouldn’t understand otherwise. I am, therefore, the only TED speaker to utter the words “come on my face” – six times. The talk went viral and this site went global without me lifting a finger; I’ve had response from people worldwide who tell me things about their porn habits and sex lives that they’ve never told anybody before. It was then that I realised I had to take this initiative forward in a way that would make it far-reaching, helpful and effective.

I always emphasise that this isn’t anti-porn, because the issue isn’t porn. The issue is that we don’t talk about sex; if we did, people would bring a real-world mindset to viewing what is essentially artificial entertainment. Our tagline is “Pro sex, pro porn, pro knowing the difference”, and our mission is to make it easier for people to talk about sex honestly both in the public domain and in their private relationships. So, what I decided to do was to socialize sex; to make it socially acceptable and just as shareable as anything else on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The first stage of this mission was MakeLoveNotPorn.tv, a user-generated video platform that celebrates real world sex; anybody worldwide can submit videos to us, but we’re very clear that we’re not porn, we’re not amateur. We’re building a new category, which is social sex. Our competition isn’t porn sites, it’s Facebook and YouTube – or it would be if they allowed sexual expression, which they don’t. We’re not about performing for the camera, we’re about capturing the reality of sex in all its funny, messy, glorious human-ness, and we curate to be sure of that. So people pay to rent and then (the) income goes to our MakeLoveNotPornstars, and we hope that they’ll become as famous and celebrated as YouTube stars. We’d also like them to make just as much money!

We might not show our faces on the internet. We might not tell ALL of our friends that we are MLNPStars. However, there are the blessed few that we’ve “come out” to. Among those are JanirasLovers and JessandRett.

We met JanirasLovers through a friend we were visiting while on a vacation. Janira was warm and bubbly, and was already shooting some art nude and fetish related work, so we thought she might like another avenue to express her sexuality through. We discussed MLNP with her, but we didn’t know if she was actually going to become an MLNPstar. We were happily and pleasantly surprised when we saw her introductory video pop up. She’s fantastic and we wish her the very best.

JessandRett are a couple that we’ve known, Jess in particular for several years, even before MLNP was a glimmer in Cindy Gallop’s eye. While we’ve never been anything but platonic friends, Jess was among the first sexually honest and open people we had ever met. She introduced us to many interesting people, among those, a woman who was our first adventure into the poly-world. Jess was instrumental in inducting us into some of the alternative lifestyle conferences around the country. We would probably have been too shy to attend any of those alone, but with her, it was easy. She taught us the lingo, the do’s and don’ts, and the “well if you decide to go there, keep this in mind, or prep in this way” etc. Jess was a sort of mentor and guide in these uncharted waters. It was very enlightening.

In the last year she met Rett. They fell in love and have become a close “couple” friend. Things are platonic between the couples, we don’t play together.

However, we are at ease with each other, a la nude, and many a decadent weekend has been spent in our hot tub sans clothing. We have no qualms about having sex with our partners publicly in front of the other couple – there is none of that silly societal shyness or shaming going on. Of course it helps to have a secluded and private property for these things.

SOPHIE BROWNER: Make Love Not Porn’s tagline, “Pro-sex, Pro-porn, Pro- knowing the difference,” really opens up the conversation about what differentiates porn sex from real world sex.

CINDY GALLOP: The tagline does communicate immediately what we’re all about. The pro-porn part of that is very important. I remember when we first put our tagline out there, [pornographic actress] Stoya, who is actually now a friend but at the time we hadn’t met, tweeted at me and said, “that’s a great mission,” which I really appreciated, coming from a porn star. We are very specific about what we describe as real world sex — porn sex is real sex, because people are having sex for real. But we’re differentiating between porn-world sex, which is performative entertainment, with camera angles in mind, versus real world sex, which is the sex that we all have in our daily lives: funny, messy, beautiful, ridiculous, glorious. The reason we are showcasing it is precisely because there is no real world sex counterpoint to porn for anybody to look at, engage with, and understand.

We are the only online platform in the world doing this. People often say, “but what about amateur porn?” But 99.9 percent of all amateur porn isn’t; it’s being made by professional production companies masked as amateur, and even when you have true amateurs, they replicate what the porn stars do because they think that’s what people want to see.

The reason amateur is the most popular sector of porn has nothing to do with the porn itself. It has everything to do with the fact that everybody wants to know what everybody else is really doing in bed. That’s what we’re showing them, in a way that nobody else is. For us, real world sex is everything and anything that happens between fully consenting people in the real world. It’s all-inclusive. It’s so many things. We celebrate real world everything: real world bodies, real world hair, real world penis size, real world breast size, real world messiness, real world accidents. The same shit happens to all of us. It’s wonderful seeing that other people have sex just like you do with all the ridiculousness, with all the joyousness, with all the wonderfulness of real world bodies.

By the way, our philosophy is everybody is beautiful when they’re having real world sex. It’s just terrific to look at what are not “aspirational” body types and see them turning each other on and being madly loved and desired. It’s enormously moving because we celebrate real world love, real world intimacy, real world feelings, real world emotions.

It’s that time again, when we look back at the past year, and forward to the coming one. And it’s January 2017 and we’re four years old this month! So I wanted to share with you the things we learned in 2016:

1. What we’re all about – social sex – is needed now more than ever.

Our mission at MLNP is very simple: to help make it easier for the world to talk about sex. When we can be open and honest about sex and owning our sexuality, we can teach and promote good sexual values and good sexual behavior and create a universal understanding of what those are in society, to ensure better sexual communication, interaction and relationships, and ultimately happier lives. 

2. We have the most amazing MakeLoveNotPornstar community.

Without you our fabulous MakeLoveNotPornstars, we are nothing. Throughout 2016 you continued to wow us with your generosity in sharing your sexual selves, and with how many more of you keep joining us from all around the world to celebrate the wonderful #realworldsex we all have in our #realworldlives. We welcomed 30 new MLNPstars this year, making our community 200-strong since launch. We’re thrilled to say that we published 131 new videos in 2016.

3. We have the most amazing MakeLoveNotPorn community, period.

We love you all. We love that you email us and tell us how MLNP has helped you and how much you support what we are doing, like Matt Storm’s moving post. We love that you are forgiving of the glitches and hiccups that come with a bootstrapping startup, we are so grateful for all your patience, belief and support.

4. We can make amazing things happen together, even with a tiny team.

MLNP is just me, MadamCurator Sarah Beall, Assistant Curator Ariel Martinez and part-time contract developer Lar van der Jagt – and I want to take this opportunity to thank Sarah, Ariel and Lar on behalf of all of us for their incredibly hard work, dedication and commitment throughout the whole of 2016.

5. It’s really, really hard to raise funding for a sextech startup.

I worked through 2016 to try and raise the funding we need to build out the full amazing user experience we really want all of you to have. I’m afraid I haven’t managed it yet. This Fast Company piece is a good summary of the challenges we face – with an entertaining headline.

Here are the things we plan to do in 2017:

1. Give you all a better experience.

Yes, our resources continue to be limited, but we are working hard on doing some things that will give you a more friction-free user experience – particularly those of you who we know have experienced issues registering credit cards/making payments, as per our explanation of why we make it so hard for you to give us your money. Watch this space!

2. Help the category to help ourselves.

When you have a world-changing startup like ours, you have to change the world to fit it, not the other way round. For the past few years I’ve been defining and championing the category MLNP operates in – sextech – in order to create more receptivity for what we’re doing.

The challenges we’ve faced trying to raise funding for MLNP made me realize that in order to get our own startup funded, we have to get the entire category funded. So as I announced at TheNextWeb conference in New York in November, I’m now working to raise the world’s first and only sextech fund: AllTheSky Holdings with a focus  (not exclusively) on female founders, who are creating some of the most innovative and disruptive ventures in sextech.

3. Scale the Social Sex Revolution – with your help.

We call ourselves the Social Sex Revolution with the emphasis on ‘social’, because at MLNP we’re pioneering a whole new category on the internet – social sex – to revolutionize sexual attitudes and behavior all around the world. We love that you’ve all joined us as Social Sex Revolutionaries, and we want to grow our movement as much as we can. So we were thrilled when Chandelier Creative invited us to spend a week at their Mermaid Ranch last summer. The Front filmed our team and MakeLoveNotPornstar gathering for a ‘Social Sex Revolution’ mini-documentary. Below are a few photos from a very special IRL experience that you can click on to view as a slideshow. The documentary will be launching in a few weeks and we’ll share it with you all when it does!

We’ve also just launched our first ever crowdfunding campaign – first ever because historically crowdfunding platforms have not embraced us, but happily iFundWomen, with its focus on female founders, had no such issues. We are so grateful to those of you who have already supported us here and welcome all further support you can give.

So our plan in 2017 is to break down some more of those pesky barriers that face sextech pioneers, in order to build out and deliver the really great MLNP social sex experience we want to give all of you – because we are so inspired and motivated by the incredible support we get from you our amazing community, every single day. The fact we’re still here, four years on, in the face of considerable obstacles, is because of you.

Make Love Not Porn’s Madam Curator (curator and community manager) Sarah Beall, who’s in charge of curation and community management, would like to see more LGBTQ people submitting their videos.

“Transsexuality is very fetishized in mainstream porn, so [we are] certainly creating a space and allowing people to be themselves without fetishizing their identity or trying to fit into some kind of niche,” she says. “We don’t ask people to define themselves. We want people to be able to come to Make Love Not Porn and feel comfortable exploring different kinds of sexuality.”

One of their “Make Love Not Porn Stars” includes Von Bettie, a 27-year-old self-professed alternative femme and queer porn performer who submits videos of herself in real, everyday sex acts with her partner, Ember. Under the “Romantic” and “Joyful” category, I found this aqua and purple-haired woman embracing her body and being both hard and soft with her partner, at once rolling with her on a bed of rose petals before inserting a ball gag into her mouth and going to town on her with a strap-on.

All of this was punctuated by real sex life moments: accidentally dropping the bottle of Sliquid lube twice, laughing as they take off each other’s clothes and the pauses when they talk to each other about what to do next. Ray agrees that it’s healthier for people to watch more realistic sexual behaviors. “It normalizes people and normalizes bodies,” she says.

Watching queer women have real sex on film was better than I had imagined; I felt like I was cheering them on and getting tips I could apply in my own sex life with my girlfriend. I mentally bid farewell to those men in public restrooms I used to rely on for a quick thrill on Tumblr. I had found something that gave me a visceral reflection of my own sex life.”
