To begin we will take you back about 10 years ago to a warm summer in Central Canada. Boy meets girl the summer before another year at college. Boy and girl like the look of one another and begin the usual dating rituals. Cindy Gallop, the former chairman and president of Bartle Bogle Hegarty US, told the audience at the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in London on Tuesday that she left her job at the British advertising agency after 16 years when she turned 45 in 2005. Colin/Gray have been a part of the MLNP.tv community for seven months now and it is a very fun and supportive part of our lives.

We are inspired to make videos based on our daily interests. We are big nerds and like sci-fi, chess and reading, so you’ll see that in some of our videos. We also just like to play with/make sexy the irritating things (cold weather, cold sores, sore muscles). This gives us an excuse to collaborate on a funny backstory and sexy costumes and is a platform for us to work together on, talk about and show what we believe is important in relationships (communication, consent, together time, alone time, and humor).

We’ve been planning to make an MLNP.tv mini-series called Sex Work about our many day jobs and fantasies we can have at them to make them more interesting. When my husband texted me at work and it read, “They liked our video.”

“What video?” I thought to myself. It took a few seconds before I realized what he was talking about. Then it occurred to me…

“I’m in a sex video on the internet.”

There was a subtle wave of nervous anxiety working its way up the back of my neck. A sensation that I usually get when I’ve forgotten something important or been taken off guard, but with it there was also this awkward sense of uncertain excitement. The thought that my private and intimate world, a part of my life never spoken about and shared with only one other, my husband, my lover, now exposed made my heart race. I visualized the door to my bedroom wide open and a lineup of strangers beginning to form down the hallway.

We finally agreed to take the plunge a few months ago and at the time I don’t remember there being one reason in particular that convinced me we should do it among the several that would suggest it might be a bad idea.

I was more at ease after watching some of the submissions and realized that MLNP was this organic, grassroots-like venue for everyday people to openly express their love and sexuality in a non-judgemental environment.What finally motivated me was knowing that in some small way I have an opportunity to be a catalyst of cultural change, to contribute to a movement in defiance of the patriarchal standards and misogynistic mindset of commercial porn. Don’t get me started on what I think of porn! But this does seem a rather extreme form of protest.

Being compensated by the community and not the website directly was an interesting and novel idea as well as and a good way of measuring acceptance and interest.

My one reservation was being recognized.

The process of discussing and sharing our thoughts with each other developed into a sexual candor and openness that was both illuminating and naughty. This little secret became our inclusive project, a mutual collaboration that reconstituted our awareness of each other and with it a renewed sense of desire. There was a different quality to our “sexy time.” We started reserving more time for ourselves, mindfully preparing for our encounters that might include some clothing or accessories to enhance the ambience. Brief showers turned into leisurely soaks in the tub, sometimes followed by a relaxing erotic massage, spontaneously beautiful interludes that transformed an otherwise normal, ordinary day into an eventful experience.

At some point in my life I started to accept that life doesn’t stand still.  Everything is subject to change and uncertainty has had more of an influence on my life than I can account for. Just when things looked like they were falling into place, when I started feeling comfortable and secure something unforeseen would come along and change everything. I used to believe that true happiness comes from pursuing comfort and being secure, and that change was something to avoid. Now my instincts tell me this isn’t true.

I see myself as a modest woman with firm moral boundaries, raised on the principle that a reserved and discreet woman will command more respect in both social and professional circles.  But unfortunately my discretion had evolved into unnatural restraint and secrecy. Forced by cultural and socioeconomic pressures we conceal our natural desires to protect our true self from being judged or exploited by others.  We believe it will be easier to maneuver in the world with a disguise.

If you could read my mind you’d see that I’m just like most other women, young at heart and with a healthy and active sexual imagination. But in all seriousness, the idea of having my sexual exploits recorded on video and then seeing it posted on the web would have been my worst nightmare imaginable.

My common sense tells me that I have nothing to be ashamed of.

What is it about being exposed and naked that is so terrifying?

Why should I be afraid of others seeing what I really am?

Is it because I’m a woman that I fear I’ll be misjudged?

Maybe it’s from my unconscious perception of what others think of me…

In an instant I’m untethered from my familiar world.

This mysterious ambivalence, this unfamiliar but exhilarating sense that I’m engaged in something on the margins of right and wrong, of danger and liberation.

At this moment I am wide awake, shaken from my slumbering existence.

My mind releases its grip on who I am…….permitting a glimpse of what I might be.

At some point in my life, probably in between figuring out monogamy and non-monogamy, I realized sex was a necessary asset to my overall well being both physically and mentally– that limiting it to any one type of sex(y) or person(s) felt suffocating. 

Since a young age I’ve always been curious about myself and the connections I could explore with others. I was growing up to be a sexual being. Over the years I experimented with myself and future lovers, have had trials and errors of in bedroom/out of bedroom romps and truly discovered my inner exhibitionist. I didn’t mind being in public places. I especially get turned on in cars! In fact, I remember losing my virginity behind a dumpster on a mattress… and it felt good and exciting to be doing these things. Natural, almost. 

While navigating my way through different styles and learning to love myself in new ways, I looked to working at a strip club. It allowed me to develop my personal style and love my body in new ways. Having others appreciate me physically, helped me learn to appreciate myself. A common misconception is that there’s only one “type” of dancer. At the club I worked in, the women were big, tall, small, a little homely, stunning, alternative… you name it! There was everyone from the girl next door to the Las Vegas vixen…and they ALL had customers.

I was in awe, I developed crushes, I met SEX POSITIVE WOMEN. I wanted them and to be like them.

So I started practicing in my spare time on the stage and pole. I auditioned during waitress nights and eventually left that club and moved onto a new one as a full time dancer. I loved it. I could write a whole short story on my club experiences but I’ll just leave it at that.

Through years and years of self exploration and balancing my blue collar life (I work as a wildland firefighter) with my sex positive life, I’ve managed to create amazing connections and experiences with beautiful people, including my now partner who supports me wholeheartedly. At this point in my life I don’t have the “stigma paralysis” I once did about certain people finding out. Now I feel confident I could sit anyone down and discuss why they should be more understanding or respect my choices in doing whatever it is I choose to do and better educate them. 

I found out about MLNP through networking on Twitter. I saw an opportunity and took it. I’m kind of an opportunist. I just know if I don’t create these experiences for myself they may never happen. “No guts, no story.”

So MLNP fell into my lap and I’m really happy it did! I even ran into Madam Curator at the Feminist Porn Awards in Toronto, Canada by chance and she recognized me before I’d even known who she was outside of emails.

This site is exactly what I like in a sexual outlet. This woman literally has your dream job: Sarah Beall, the Montreal-based curator for the website Make Love Not Porn, makes a living staring at naked people all day. The site is dedicated to real world sex — that means no studios, no script, and no actors collecting a paycheck for fucking a stranger. Just real couples filming how they get busy, who want to share it with others. Beall was kind enough to sit down with Maxim and tell us about how she got her start, what her mother thinks of her job, and how she’s helping change the porn industry for the better.

So how the hell do you get a job as a porn curator?
It was sort of a job that was tailor-made for me. My official title is Madam Curator for Make Love Not Porn. I’ve always been really interested in people who are having an open, frank dialogue around sex. In school I had side projects: I was in a burlesque troupe, I sold sex toys, I was a photo cropper for a dating site, and the biggest thing that led me directly to my current job is that I was a longtime contributor and later editor of a zine called Lickety Split Smut Zine.

A smut zine? Go on…
It was a pansexual zine dedicated to sex positive expression and thought.

That’s a mouthful.
Well, the idea was just to have an alternative representation from the mainstream depictions of sex…I was curating art, writing, doing photoshoots, doing artistic design and stuff like that. One day I found out about MakeLoveNotPorn.com. I had no idea who ran it, but I thought the message was so cool: Real world sex and porn world sex were different.

Right. But how did that turn into a job?
So, I reached out to the site, run by Cindy Gallop, and I interviewed her. We just really, really hit it off. So she said, “Come to New York, let’s have coffee, let’s talk.” I brought copies of Lickety Split that I had been a part of to her place and she looked at them and she said…she basically explained to me the entire idea behind Make Love Not Porn, even though she was still designing it at the time. And I said you need a curator.

Direct!
Yeah, and about eight months later — it took her a little while to get funding — she called me and said, “I would like you to come on board.” So, it was interesting because I had been working towards this position for a very long time.

How so?
I always forget to mention this—in the eight months between learning about MLNP and getting hired, I took a job as a porn script writer in the mainstream adult film industry.

Wait, what?
You know, I started out producing scripts. I think I was writing like 30 porn scripts a month, or something like that.

Oh, my god, that’s like one a day. You never think of it being mass produced to that level.
I know. But how that’s translated into my role now. I can basically spot a porn cliché a mile away.

So what are the biggest porn clichés?
Well, let’s see. First of all, how porn is shot. This is one of the major things I look for when I’m curating real world sex. You know, porn is shot solely so that you know the viewer gets the best view of penetration at all times. The porn stars are working quite hard, but they’re not necessarily comfortable.

True.

Coming on command, like it’s a lot more hard work than people realize. So definitely positions and angles, obviously the facial — a guy coming on a woman’s face, that’s pretty much de rigueur.

Do you have a script that you wrote that you’re most proud of?
I do, yes. It’s not very PC. But one of the first scripts I wrote, it was sort of a political satire script. It was called Republicunts. And it was for a lesbian site. I wrote a script about a Republican candidate who was running on an anti-masturbation platform. Her slogan was “Masturbation is for sissy liberals.” And to their credit, the props people, for that scene actually made posters that read “Masturbation is for sissy liberals.”

See, it’s all in the details.
I was very pleased about that.

Did you ever have any reservations about getting into the porn industry?
Yeah, I definitely did. I didn’t think that women in porn were being inherently abused by being in the industry. But I’d seen the belly of the beast exposed. There is a lot of desensitization that has to happen. You have to watch a lot of porn to write porn. It’s a very competitive industry, in the most boring way. Everyone is copying each other and how people one up each other is by being more extreme.

Ever have any strange moments at your old job?
I remember my first day working in the mainstream porn industry, I did a training session. Then I proceeded to sit down with my supervisor, whose desk was in the editing area. And I just remember seeing a close up shot of deep-dick penetration. And I just had to stand there and be like “Okay, I’m really, totally comfortable!”

So you in your current job as curator, you wake up in the morning, and then what?
Well, I wake up, and I work from home. I usually work in my pajamas.

Ha, very sexy. 
I know! I have a look at what has been submitted to me. A lot of my job is reviewing the real sex that people have in their everyday lives. Most of it is actually corresponding with those people. The really cool thing about my work is that I pretty much have a one-on-one correspondence with every single Make Love Not Porn star on our site.

What kinds of things do you go back and forth about?
At first it will be helping people contextualize their submissions. I have some criteria for curation. One of the things is that the video has to be contextualized. So aside from being consensual and cliché free, you have to shoot an intro video especially if people are new to the site. I ask people to talk to the camera, explaining why they decided to share their real world sex.

What else?
I also ask people to really pull the camera back. I’m totally not against close-ups, but porn is very, very into close-ups. Even when people have decided to do it, a lot of the people on our site have never filmed themselves having sex before, let alone thought of sharing it online. So I consider myself a little bit of a hand holder, a bit of a coach.

How do you decide what kind of themes you’re looking for?
They emerge organically out of the content that we get. We’re developing a new vocabulary around sex, because so much of how we speak is a construct of porn. So we actually recently introduced our “Lick Job” tag, which is our tag for videos of cunnilingus.

We got this video from this amazing 20 year old…she’s a beautiful, sexy young woman. And so she shot a video of herself masturbating in a hammock in her backyard.

Very nice.
We have a lot of people who film videos outside. We just got our first underwater video. It’s very exciting.

Woah!
And then, we have this lovely Mexican couple who have been on our website for a while now. They’re amazing, their page is called We Made Love and Lasagna. They recently went on an amazing vacation where they shot themselves having sex against the backdrop of the mountain valley. The view is incredible.

Sounds exotic.
But we also have a lot of in-the-kitchen sex videos — people on kitchen counters and stuff like that which is really fun.

So you’re staring at people’s junk all day: do you ever feel desensitized to any of it?
Working for Make Love Not Porn and curating the videos has actually re-sensitized me. We had a viewing with some of our team members, and a guy there said “Wow, when I watch porn I want to jerk off. Watching real world sex makes me want to have sex with my girlfriend.”

How do you think your job has influenced your own sex life?
Hmm. It’s made me realize the value of using sex videos as foreplay. Even though I wrote porn a lot, I was not super familiar with it before going in. And now, I kind of can’t even watch it because it’s so fake.

Cindy Gallop has a lot of lines. Here’s one of them: “I’m in the Steve Jobs reality-distortion business.” Her line, like many things Gallop says, is both immediately catchy and mildly perplexing; at first it makes decent sense but upon further inspection seems like it could be nonsense. Or maybe it’s the other way around? The same can be said of Gallop’s current fixation (and the reason for my visit to her eccentric, all-black, modeled-after-a-Shanghai-nightclub apartment): She wants to move porn out from the shadows as a vice industry, alter the way we talk about, think about, and share stories about our most private intimate relationships and, while she’s at it, essentially transform the future of adult entertainment.

That’s a monstrously tall order. But for Gallop it’s personal. Gallop is 55 but now only dates men in their twenties, a policy that has led her to believe that bad sex education combined with unlimited access to free porn has turned millennials into less than tender and attentive lovers. Her solution: Since porn has become a stand-in for sex education for most younger men, Gallop created MakeLoveNotPorn.com, which is essentially a PSA site to dispel myths about the adult industry. The More You Know, but for true facts about facials.

The site’s popularity quickly prompted a spin-off called MakeLoveNotPorn.tv, a pay site that features non-porn types filming themselves having sex with real partners and flings. The goal: to illustrate the varied landscape of real-world sex, which Gallop and her team define as fun, silly, embarrassing, messy, and markedly different from the deadly serious sex you’ll find on your average tube site.

“Imagine the sexual equivalent of’ ‘Charlie Bit My Finger,”’ she beams. Most, if not all, contributors on the site are paying members who film their scenes themselves, but Gallop believes there’s a way — through safe-for-work couple “intro videos” — to engineer virality that might get people to shell out the cash to watch the full scene. These “MakeLoveNotPornStars,” as Gallop calls them, lack the extreme proportions, fitness levels, tans, and natural gifts of most traditional porn stars. It’s a wholly different representation of sexuality that draws members with the promise of sex that looks familiar. So far MLNP has brought in 881 submissions, resulting in 333 videos on the site and 100 unique “MakeLoveNotPornstars” (mostly average Joes) and has roughly 350,000 members, according to Gallop.

Gallop hopes that real-world sex in the adult entertainment world will lead to viewers having a healthier relationship with porn. But there are limits to this altruism; there’s also, according to Gallop, substantial money to be made in sex-related startups and porn that makes you feel good about watching people being sexual. Gallop likes to recite the Silicon Valley mantra that the biggest problems deliver the biggest returns, and sees plenty of problems (an unhealthy cultural relationship with sex) and billions of potential users (people who, uh, like sex). And destigmatizing porn would ultimately mean drastically widening the pool of investors willing to back “sex tech,” which Gallop defines as “technology-driven ventures, designed to enhance, innovate, and disrupt every area of human sexuality and human sexual experience.”

“If [Silicon Valley] chose to actively focus on adult and sex as an area of investment, oh my god, the opportunities,” she says, rearing back into her couch with excitement. On the surface, the worlds of porn and tech seem uniquely suited to each other; the adult world needs the money, while venture capitalists, who often self-describe as risk takers, have a potentially massive audience in porn consumers and, consequently, billions to be made (the adult industry alone has been said to be valued at $87 billion in 2015). But even with erotica having its zeitgeist moment (50 Shades, etc.), Gallop struggles. “High-profile VC firms can’t bounce my investor profile back fast enough,” she sighs. “You’d be amazed how many fucks are given when it comes to sex tech.”

At an event Q&A this winter, Gallop confronted PayPal founder and infamous investor Peter Thiel — who recently led an investment in a marijuana tech company — to ask if he thought startups focusing on sex tech, or the future of sex, were as untouchable as the rest of Silicon Valley. Thiel stepped around the question with a sterile non-answer. And for the past nine months Gallop has struggled to bring angel investors on board to fund MLNP.tv. “It goes like this: I meet with somebody who’s interested and captivated by the idea. We have a great conversation, and then talk to spouse or a friend who will say, ‘What the fuck?!’ and all of a sudden the dialogue just disappears,” Gallop says.

As a human with a wifi connection, it’s probably not news to you that porn and the internet are BFFs. Type in an innocuous word like, “pony,” alongside another fun word like, “play,” and all of a sudden you’re no longer designing invites for your niece’s fifth birthday party — you’re receiving an invitation to an all-out brony orgy. Now, you may not mind the invitation at all (You do you, bronies) but the timing’s definitely a bit off, and well, what was up with that sad looking pink brony in the corner? Was he really enjoying himself? Maybe you’ll give him extra butterfly friends on the invite to cheer him up.

As the curator and community manager for MakeLoveNotPorn.tv, a site that hosts pre-screened videos of non-performative, consensual, contextualized, creative, and porn cliche-free #realworldsex, I see this natural human curiosity play out in real time every day and I’m here to tell you there’s plenty of deliciousness out there!

Aside from the fact that I’m paid to watch people’s uncensored sexy times all day — Hi, mom! — one of the most rewarding and initially unexpected pleasures my chosen career has brought me has been learning how valuable it can be for couples (and singles) to have access to videos that show real people having the sex they have in their everyday lives. At a private screening before MLNP.tv went live, a man in attendance who had just finished watching a video by one of our MakeLoveNotPornStars said, “When I watch porn, I want to jerk off. A video of two regular people having sex had turned this guy on, and instead of making him want to go furtively rub one out, it made him want to share pleasure with another human being. That, plus he didn’t have to experience what I like to call a “porn hangover,” where once he’d had his orgasm, he suddenly experienced a rush of sexual shame followed by concerns about what he’d just watched. Were the actors in the scene consenting and properly paid? Was it ethically produced? Was that screaming orgasm in the middle real? Did it matter to him that the orgasm was probably fake? Was there something wrong with him?

MakeLoveNotPorn is pro-sex, pro-porn, and pro-knowing the difference. At MLNP, we believe that #realworldsex is the hottest sex there is and that there’s nothing amateur about it. We want people to understand the differences between #pornworldsex and #realworldsex because we’ve intimately experienced the confusion and disappointment that can occur when you don’t.
